Bill of Materials
Assembling and batch processing require the right parts or ingredients to be in the right place at the right time. Without this there is no chance or schedule adherence, maintaining OEE levels and keeping customers satisfied. Knowing the location of the parts is vital to production efficiency this can lead to ‘over kitting’ simply to be on the safe side in meeting targets such as on time delivery in full.
The issuing of a BOM (Bill Of Material) is frequently the trigger that causes production to commence. BOM’s are issued either manually or from ERP systems. In discrete manufacturing it may be that efficient production can commence with say 95% of kitting complete, in batch processes this latitude is unlikely to be available.
Many companies effectively over issue to make sure that the job can be done, this accumulation or parts and ingredients can account for significant cost, indirectly affecting profitability, in addition parts and ingredients may have a shelf life which is being eroded by such practices. Such methods increase WIP and are detrimental to profitability and to lean working. Accurate kitting against BOM is an effective improvement.
EmsPT has witnessed many variations of this problem, and has highlighted unforeseen consequences for traceability and recall procedures. Some KPI measures such as SPC (Statistical Process Control) can reveal that it takes 102 kits to make 100 parts, the inference being that surpluses are accruing and the probability of a sub-assembly or supplier quality problem is not been addressed. EmsPT solutions include a data driven approach to all aspects of manufacture and processing following the issue of a BOM. Manufacturing execution systems can be directly integrated with ERP which provides accelerated workflow and reduces error.
Would it help if you had accurate and timely parts and ingredients to hand to make production smoother; increasing your ability for on time delivery in full and providing insight into processes to support continuous improvement?
