There is a cyclic characteristic to manufacturing IT investments; this is Vision, Specification, Deployment, Management and then Improvement, leading to the next cycle. The Vision and Specification stages are vital to project success, the specification may be good but if the vision has not been set optimally, using the latest proven technology, then return and value will be compromised. Deployment (literally “doing the work”) is assisted by using technology that allows reusable modules and allows collaborative working to shorten development time. The Management phase is the actual running of the system, its ease of access for continuous improvement and using rich data to produce insight by Business Intelligence.

The cycle completes with the need for more improvement which may be through changing markets, technology or regulation, and the process starts again. With the manufacturing pressures changing so rapidly, the need for the supporting system to adapt quickly has never been so important.
