The functional capabilities of the level 3 space are described by the MESA-11 honey comb functions. The SP95 committee has built on this work previously completed by MESA International in addition to the work previously completed by the Purdue University workshop on computer-integrated manufacturing. Part 3 of the S95 standard focuses on the manufacturing activities historically considered MES. The S95 part 3 operations functions module is an equivalent to the MESA model. A key element of a successful MES system is its integration with other functional areas. This is a critical consideration when developing a vision of a manufacturing solution. This integration has been defined in details on the ANSI/ISA-95.00.01 Functional enterprise-control model.
