Challenge
A £2.9m new product development initiative scaling up the new product from laboratory to full scale manufacturing was an innovative step which required a fully automated system that had to be FDA validated and could readily integrate into the existing corporate IT system.
Solution
A fully automated Manufacturing Execution System (MES) incorporating: Wonderware InTouch SCADA, Wonderware Historian real-time database, Terminal Services.
Implementation
From the outset EmsPT consultants produced clear user requirements specifications and worked with Boots and IBM (responsible for Boots IT systems) to implement an MES system that was easy to deploy and was IT compliant. Dual redundant servers met validation requirements protecting production data from any risk of loss and resulting costly batch wastage. Located within the central IT server area Terminal Services inherited the group IT Security policies. The Wonderware Historian database ensured validation procedures were met in manufacture. A radical innovation was the Biometric Thumbprint devices to gain access to the system. The FDA ready Wonderware components completed the system in meeting Access and Security requirements of the FDA 21 CFR Part11. Change management was addressed with the operators welcoming the benefits that the Biometric device provided. The project team delivered to schedule and to budget.
